Fiesta Rear Shock Brace Review - Matt Binstead

While we sponsor Matt's Time Attack Fiesta, we also wanted him to try out our rear shock tower brace on a non race prepped Fiesta to get his impressions, so he installed one on his girlfriends Fiesta ST:

His response when he sent us the review shows why it's a great and very affordable handling upgrade! At only £139 why not improve your handling with this simple bolt on mod?

"Below is my write up about the rear strut tower brace. I've been totally honest about the product as I am with everything else and I am thoroughly impressed with how it fits and performed.

I've given a few local lads a test drive with the brace fitted and they both said it really stiffened up the rear of the car and made it feel more connected!".....

Matt Binstead Steeda Fiesta Rear Shock Tower Brace Review

On opening the box I was first amazed at the quality of the rear shock tower brace, the welding on the all pieces was clean and consistent and the powder coating was flawless. It really began to fill me with confidence before I had even fitted it!
After reading the instructions the installation was simple and easy to follow taking 30 minutes maximum. Following the photo guide carefully I firstly swapped out the standard dampening bolts for the longer items in the fitting kit and then installed the spacers on top of the fixed nuts to ensure a strong and sturdy fit without compromising the structural rigidity of the rear damper mounting points.

I then followed the same steps for the drivers side (Note: the drivers side only requires one spacer as there is a factory brace already providing correct spacing). Then I trimmed and refitted the carpet around the new mounting points to attain a clean and OEM looking fit. I then bolted the brace down torqueing the nuts to the correct specs and went out for a test drive.

First impressions

Under braking in a straight line the car is much more stable, there is much less squirming and the car feels much more planted to the tarmac even under heavy braking situations. It really gives a more positive and confident feel through the weight transfer phase and makes sure maximum tyre contact is kept to the ground.
When turning into corners and sharp bends the body roll feels more in tune with the rest of the chassis and there is no feel of looseness or the car rolling at its own speed. It feels directly proportional to drivers input meaning that I can safely push harder through the twists and turns without worrying that the back end could oversteer without me making it do so.

To summarise my first impressions of the rear tower shock brace are positive, its really stiffened up the rear body roll and has made the chassis feel that little bit more connected front to back and side to side under braking and turn in.  It really gave myself a better feel for the chassis and it felt that it was more in tune with my inputs rather than reacting to the scenarios as it wanted.
I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to improve the rear end feel of their car especially for tight twisty roads where the really want to maximise the full potential of their driving style and chassis without compromising the cars functionality.

Two things we'd add to Matt's review:

1. Once installed the shock tower brace is super easily removable. Just undo the top nuts and pop it off (if you need to carry big stuff in the boot for example) and when you are done load lugging, just pop it back on and re-tighten the nuts!

You can now benefit from a Steeda 555-5753 Focus Rear Shock Tower Brace if you are a mk3 Focus ST / RS owner as well... Order here!

You can follow Matts exploits in Time Attack UK and also on his Instagram @MattbinsteadRacing   and Facebook page:

Keep adding to the Steeda podiums Matt and thanks for the great review!

What is Bumpsteer?

What The Heck Is Bumpsteer? Why Do I need A Bumpsteer Kit??

January 29, 2018 4:04 pm

Most people have experienced bumpsteer at some point in their driving careers. Yes… even you! So what exactly is it, and how can the Steeda bumpsteer kits help?
We offer Mustang Bumpsteer kits (as per link before) and Focus Bumpsteer kits

With it being such a widely experienced phenomenon, car manufacturers are well aware, and they do plenty to make sure you experience minimal bumpsteer right from the factory. However, as you start modifying the factory suspension, particularly by lowering the car, bumpsteer may become more of an issue. Any adjustment to ride height affects the suspension geometry, so it’s important to get the front end geometry right and eliminate that bumpsteer any time that you alter your ride height.

Bumpsteer is when the car goes rogue and steers itself without steering wheel input from the driver. This is a combined result of bumps in the road and discrepancies with the length or angle of your suspension and steering linkages. As your wheel goes over a bump, it moves vertically up and down. This vertical movement causes the wheels to toe in or out depending on the aforementioned length/angle discrepancies of your suspension.

Specifically, the root cause of bumpsteer in your vehicle can be attributed to the tie rods and control arms traveling on different planes from one another along the arc of travel. When the wheel moves up and down it arcs slightly, so differences in length will cause the components to arc at different rates, and it is here that the toe changes. Take a look at the image below (credit: – the tie rod and the lower control arm have fixed points that are not the same, so the arc on which they travel is different. As they move along that arc the tie rod is going to increasingly exert outward pressure on the wheel,  causing it to toe out. This phenomenon is called bumpsteer. If you want more in-depth knowledge on the subject, there are plenty of resources online that cover bumpsteer to a more technical degree, but our goal here is to provide a simple explanation.

Our bumpsteer kits fix this issue by allowing you to correct the angle of the tie rod so that it matches the control arm. This means they will be traveling on the same plane, in turn eliminating unwanted alterations in toe when the wheels hit bumps. There are other ways to address the issue of bumpsteer, but our kits offer a wide range of adjustment and they don’t require spindle modification for fitment or adjustment. It’s a simple, bolt-on solution that’s the culmination of scrupulous engineering research and design!

Steeda S550 Mustang Rear Shock Mount review

We just got a fantastic review from one of our great UK customers, Andrew.

What the review highlights is WHY Steeda go the extra mile developing parts other companies don't even imagine. Its why Steeda have a huge edge when it comes to Ford performance as we are focussed ONLY on Ford performance. When "multi marque" companies develop a few Mustang products they then move back to Audis, and Volkswagens and Chevrolets(!) and so on. Steeda use and improve our products every day, on the street and on track. We keep coming back every day, thinking "what can we do better?", or "what else can improve the car?". It's this commitment to constant improvement that shows "The Steeda Difference!"

Some of our parts dont seem very "exciting" to look at. An exhaust or an intake, or coilover suspension, everyone knows what they do, and what they offer, and yes Steeda make great examples of all of those 'mainstay' parts. But engine mounts? Shock mounts? Alignment bushes? A spherical bearing??? Huh? Why bother? Well Andrew's review shows just what such a "why bother?" part can do... read on!

"I just want to give a shout out to Steeda really, because when a company makes such a great part it really deserves note and others being informed.

As many here will know I've thoroughly gone through my car with a fine tooth comb trying to find a balance of sports car like handling, well the best one can expect for such a big heavy bruiser whilst maintaining an element of GT ride comfort.

Though dropping over 2k on KW coilovers helped a lot, the part that made one of the biggest improvements to ride quality and body control was a relatively cheap one:

Steeda Billet Rear Shock Mounts

Before anyone says anything, Steeda have not sponsored me, they did not even give me a discount on the part, but in fairness I don't think I asked either.

Still I got this part because even with KW's over nasty roads the rear-end of the car just seemed jiggly and when I installed the KW rear shocks I noticed how even in the stock position the stock rear shock mounts are binding due to them being a rubber bushing, which made me think that can't be good.

After seeing so many people in shock and awe on the US section installing these parts for the added bling and strength only but then noticing the ride quality dramatically improved I was curious as to why.

It turns out something which Steeda have not marketed so heavily is the fact these parts have a spherical bearing instead of a rubber one. As I've upgraded a lot of parts in the rear of my car to spherical and witnessed the improvements this part made sense to try out.

I went in skeptical and have had this part on the car for over a month now, I've being so impressed I kind of forgot to post about it here in the UK section but needless to say what an improvement in ride quality, my car now has absolutely zero bounce, jiggle, float or whatever you wish to call it.

I would say those seeking a good looking setup with great handling improvement but keeping cost to a minimum should buy the following:
- Ford/Eibach Springs: £150 (still available?)
- BMR CB005: £200
- Steeda billet rear shock mounts: £200
- Eibach 15mm spacers all round or 15/25mm: £300

I think the above will give you the great looks/stance we all want from our cars along with a ride quality and handling improvement. Plus the above should be possible all in for under a grand and for those who just want the better looks and a mild handling improvement will achieve that with the above without breaking the bank and all the above is now available from UK sources.

I seriously recommend these upper rear shock mounts, because the jiggle I found seriously annoying in this car, they all do it and it properly upset me on some of the rougher roads I drive on daily plus of course the car felt more connected by doing so.

Combine these with state of the art coilovers like KW and you will be blown away, my car is now a lot comfier and rides better than it did stock, it actually feels softer over rough roads but the moment you start throwing it around or driving it hard the whole thing just comes alive and feels about as sports car as this big girl will ever feel.

I finally got the cars suspension on a handling and ride comfort front to a point where I like it and feel confident to attack a road hard but at the same time it has superior comfort and ride quality to what it was stock."

Thanks Andrew! Please everyone, keep submitting your reviews and feedback, we love it when we hear back from our customers.

OZ Racing "Rally Racing" wheel - new for 2017

New for 2017 from our friends from OZ Racing, is this classic fan disc style rally wheel.

"The timeless and genuine racing icon is reborn. The waiting is over. Rally Racing, the wheel that made history in rally racing, is back with an even more modern and aggressive look."

In the 90’s OZ put in the best performance at the World Rally Championships, where it fitted tires on the cars of some of the most important teams competing. One was the Toyota team led by pilot Carlos Sainz who actually won his first world title in 1990. The wheel is white with a recognizable central "disc” that sports the red OZ Racing logo written twice. The new Rally Racing wheel has the same distinguishing features, albeit updated. Using its timeless look as the starting point, the new Rally Racing wheel has been given new exclusive details such as the spoke shape which overlaps with the central disc and gives the wheel a different look, by making it seem even larger and more aggressive. The central disc is flat and features the traditional OZ Racing logo written twice."

Note lettering is not a sticker its under the lacquer, so cant come off.

Rally Racing is available in 17”, 18” and 19” and with a Race White + red lettering or Dark Graphite + Silver lettering finish starting from February 2017!

Order yours now from Steeda UK to be first to rock the Rally Racing look!

As you can see above it looks great on a Focus RS, but we would LOVE to see a set of 17" RRs on a Fiesta?

Who wants to be first? Contact us for a special lead user offer....
